Is ChatGPT available in Syria? AI tools available in Syria as of October 2026
Is ChatGPT available in Syria? The short answer, as of 26 October 2026, is no. Syria is not on OpenAI's list of supported countries, nor on the lists of the three other big AI tools. Here is what each provider's official page says:
- ChatGPT and the OpenAI API: Syria is on neither list, and OpenAI warns that access from outside the listed countries may get an account blocked or suspended.
- Anthropic's Claude: Syria is not a supported region, and the policy explicitly excludes use by anyone physically located in an unsupported region.
- Google Gemini: Google's Gemini availability page lists over 230 countries and territories for the web app, and Syria is not one of them; the Gemini API and Google AI Studio list, updated 22 October 2026, leaves it out too.
- Microsoft Copilot: Microsoft says Copilot is available in over 170 markets except embargoed ones, and its Microsoft 365 availability page states that all Microsoft Online Services are unavailable in Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Sudan and Syria.
This follows sanctions relief: the US Treasury removed its Syrian Sanctions Regulations effective 26 August 2025, and Syria's designation as a State Sponsor of Terrorism was rescinded on 24 August 2026. But each provider updates its list on its own timetable, so don't assume the door has opened.
So we don't recommend a VPN or a borrowed account: both break the provider's terms and put your account and business data at risk. Before your company adopts any AI tool, ask four questions:
- Does the provider's supported-countries page name Syria?
- Do its terms allow business use and the kind of data you will enter?
- Where are prompts sent and stored, and are they used to train models?
- Can you pay for it through a legitimate channel from Syria?
The prompts below work in any AI assistant, so keep them ready for the day your company is entitled to use one.
ChatGPT prompts that work: the formula and 3 bad-vs-good examples
A good prompt gives the AI five things: a role, context, a task, constraints and an output format. In Syria, add a sixth: name the currency, and which pound, every time. The formula:
- Role: "You are an accountant at an import company" or "You are a Damascene copywriter".
- Context: your business, your city, the customer and exactly what happened.
- Task: one clear verb: write, convert, summarise, compare, classify.
- Constraints: length, language or dialect, tone, and anything that must not be mentioned.
- Format: a table, bullet points, a WhatsApp message or an email with a subject line.
- Currency: "US dollars", "new Syrian pounds" or "old pounds", never just "pounds".
Naming the pound is not pedantry. Old notes stopped being legal tender on 31 July 2026, but older contracts and ledgers are in old pounds, and Decree 293 of 2025 says documents with financial obligations dated in the exchange period are refused unless they state whether new or old pounds are meant. End any long prompt with: "Ask me about anything missing before you start." Three examples, bad first, then good:
- Pricing. Bad: "Make me a price list." Good: "You are the accountant of a plumbing-supplies shop in Homs. Convert these USD costs into selling prices in new Syrian pounds at 122 new pounds per dollar with a 25% markup on cost, as a table with the currency on every amount."
- Suppliers. Bad: "Write an email to a supplier." Good: "You are a purchasing manager. Write an email in English to a tile supplier in Turkey asking for a CIF Latakia price for two containers and a 5% discount, under 150 words, with a subject line."
- Marketing. Bad: "Write a post for my restaurant." Good: "Write 3 versions of a Facebook post in Damascene dialect for a pastry shop in Damascus about its lunch offer, each under 40 words, no exaggeration, ending with a call to order on WhatsApp."
Always check the arithmetic. With the first prompt, a 40-dollar item should come out at 6,100 new pounds (40 × 122 × 1.25). The rate of 122 is only an example (the Central Bank of Syria's official bulletin average on 25 October 2026), so use the rate for the day you price. If the AI gives another number, fix it before customers see the list.

Protect customer data, and what Odoo 20's AI depends on
Never paste a customer's name, phone number, national ID or balance into an AI tool; replace them with codes first. Syria has a personal data protection law: Law No. 12 of 2024, in force since 1 January 2025 and published on the National Agency for Information Technology Services laws page. It treats financial data as sensitive, and its Article 15 bans transferring personal data to another country, with narrow exceptions, unless the level of protection has been verified and the Personal Data Protection Authority has licensed the transfer. Pasting it into a tool whose servers sit outside Syria may count as such a transfer, so ask your lawyer about your case. The anonymising routine:
- Write "customer-017" instead of the name, and keep the code key in your own file, not in the chat.
- Remove phone numbers, ID numbers, addresses and bank accounts.
- Round amounts or give a range when the exact figure isn't needed.
- Never paste passwords, API keys or salaries next to names.
- Put the real names back yourself once you have the answer.
Odoo 20 Enterprise builds AI into the database (the AI app is not in the free Community edition): agents with skills and sources, AI fields, email drafting, voice transcription, image generation, and a Live Chat agent that answers visitors and creates leads. But it is not independent of outside providers. Odoo's 20.0 documentation says AI requests go through Odoo's IAP service and use credits; the release notes say you select an AI provider; the 19.0 documentation names OpenAI and Google Gemini; and the 20.0 API-keys page is still under construction. The documentation also warns that installing the AI app on the Standard plan automatically triggers an upsell to the Custom plan. So ask Odoo to confirm the service works for a database used from Syria before you build on it; the rest of Odoo 20 runs without AI. More in our guide to Odoo 20 AI for businesses in Syria.
Your step this week: pick one prompt from the list, write your business context in a file your team shares, and bring your prices and customers into one system. If you are planning a move to Odoo, start with what's new in Odoo 20.
Frequently asked questions
Is ChatGPT available in Syria now?
No, not as of 26 October 2026. Syria is missing from OpenAI's supported-countries lists for ChatGPT and its API, and OpenAI warns that access from outside the listed countries may get an account blocked or suspended. Claude, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot also leave Syria out. The lists change, so check the provider's official page before signing up, and don't rely on a VPN or a borrowed account.
Which currency should prices and quotes use now that the pound has lost two zeros?
Always name the currency. Decree 293 of 2025 made 100 old pounds equal to 1 new pound and says financial documents dated in the exchange period are refused unless they specify new or old pounds. That period ended on 30 July 2026; since 31 July, the Central Bank says "Syrian pound" in official dealings means the new pound. For local customers, the Central Bank's legislation register lists Legislative Decree No. 5 of 2024 as in force: it bars using other currencies for payment, and displaying goods and services in them without Cabinet approval, with exceptions that include foreign trade. So price locally in new pounds, keep USD for imports and buyers abroad, and check your case with your accountant.
Can I use Odoo 20's AI features from Syria?
We found no official confirmation that you can. Odoo 20's AI features, which are Enterprise-only, go through Odoo's IAP service, consume credits and rely on the AI provider you select, and Odoo's 19.0 documentation names OpenAI and Google Gemini, neither of which lists Syria. Ask Odoo to confirm before you build any workflow on them. Accounting, inventory, sales and point of sale in Odoo 20 all work without AI.
Does Syria have a personal data protection law?
Yes. Law No. 12 of 2024 on personal data protection has been in force since 1 January 2025. It defines personal and sensitive data, including financial data, regulates how they are processed, and in Article 15 bans transferring personal data to another country, with narrow exceptions, unless the protection level has been verified and the Personal Data Protection Authority has licensed the transfer. So remove customer names and numbers before pasting anything into an AI tool, and consult a lawyer on sensitive cases.
