Odoo 20 AI in Syria: Agents, MCP, Credits and Controlled Automation
What Odoo 20's AI agents, MCP connection and website assistant really do, which tasks suit a Syrian company, how IAP credits are billed, and why AI needs a live connection when offline mode does not.

What AI in Odoo 20 actually does, and why it stays optional
Many Syrian companies are in the middle of rebuilding their systems: moving the books out of spreadsheets, settling on USD and SYP as working currencies, and bringing stock and sales into one database. If that describes you, the first thing to know about Odoo 20, released in September 2026, is that its AI features sit on top of that work rather than underneath it. Accounting, multi-currency and inventory run without them.
What has changed is that AI in Odoo 20 can act, not only answer. An agent is shaped by its skills, which bundle instructions with the tools it may use (the release renames "topics" to "skills"), and by the sources it reads. An agent without skills can only give information. With skills such as Create Records or Update Records, it can:
- create records you describe, including from an uploaded PDF of instructions
- update existing records
- run when an automated or scheduled action calls it
- show live updates on each step instead of a generic "AI is thinking" message
- ask questions and request permission through buttons you click
One condition applies to all of it: every AI feature in Odoo 20 consumes credits bought through IAP, Odoo's in-app purchase service. The cost model is covered in the last section.
The feature map: agents, MCP, the website and shop assistant, and AI across apps
Beyond the agent chat, AI shows up across apps:
- Agents: create and update records, answer questions about a file while you preview it, accept uploaded files, filter by time period when building views, take dictated requests, and use default prompts with dynamic values.
- Sources: PDFs, web links, files in Documents and Knowledge articles, with a Restrict to Sources option and manual reprocessing when a source changes.
- Model choice: you pick an AI provider and Odoo uses the best model for each task.
- Website: the AI Website Assistant builds pages, snippets, forms and menus through chat, and the editor marks every block it generated or changed.
- eCommerce: from the Shop page, generate product images or change a product's name, price or description.
- Other apps: AI help with a page's SEO, social post writing, campaign setup in Marketing Automation, suggested answers from similar tickets in Helpdesk, and renaming uploaded files in Documents.
MCP, in plain terms, lets an external AI tool connect to your database at the database URL followed by /mcp. Each user creates an API key with the MCP scope and an expiry date, and the tool then works with that user's permissions, nothing more. By default only five read tools are exposed: getting models and fields, retrieving initial context, search and grouped reads. Anything else must be switched on deliberately.
On a bilingual site, the marker shows which blocks the assistant generated or changed, so reviewers know where to check both the Arabic and the English text.
Odoo 20 AI in Syria: realistic uses, each with a human checkpoint
Ask which task in your week AI can take on while a person still signs off. Examples that fit Syrian businesses:
- Sales: a live chat agent on your website answers routine product questions; when it cannot answer with high confidence, or a request involves custom pricing, contracts or a demo, it collects the visitor's contact details and creates a lead for your team (this needs the CRM app).
- Customer service: Helpdesk suggests answers from similar past tickets, and an agent restricted to your Knowledge articles answers staff questions about internal procedures.
- Finance and admin: an agent turns a PDF, such as a supplier's list of new items, into product records that a person checks before they are used on orders or bills.
- Management: an owner based outside Syria asks for sales by branch through an MCP client limited to the default read tools.
- Marketing: the website assistant drafts pages; staff edit both languages before publishing.
Two points specific to Syria. First, what your accountants will notice most in Odoo 20 comes from the accounting and currency updates, not the AI section: the exchange-rate date shown on converted totals, the rate displayed when registering a foreign-currency payment, exchange differences consolidated into one line per invoice, and bill line prediction built from bill history. Second, AI features depend on Odoo's online IAP service and the AI provider you selected, so they need a live connection. Offline mode keeps records and past searches usable during an outage; AI waits for the line to return.
Governance and data control: a checklist before the first agent goes live
Odoo 20 gives you the controls; the work is to use them on purpose. The release notes make no claim about Arabic output quality, so test agents on your own Arabic documents and have a person review anything customers will read. Before an agent goes live:
- Grant skills sparingly: an agent that only answers gets no create or update skills.
- Turn on Restrict to Sources for agents that answer from your documents.
- Keep approvals with your team: agents ask questions and request permission through buttons, and stop for confirmation when they reach their tool-call limit.
- Review stored conversations, which are kept for up to 30 days after the last message.
- For MCP, use a dedicated user with limited rights and a key with a short expiry.
- Expose extra MCP tools only as a deliberate decision, and tick "Readonly Tool" only on tools that truly do not write, since that tick tells the client it can run them without asking for approval.
- Put business rules inside tool code: in AI server actions the AI step does not enforce them, and a tool runs unconditionally unless its code prevents it.
- Audit access with the user-group change log in each user's chatter and the simplified access rights.
Finally, prompts and the record data they include are sent to the AI provider you selected, so check your local data-protection obligations before customer or employee data reaches any AI feature. In Ask AI, Send as Message and Log as Note open an editable pop-up first.
What it costs and how to start small
AI in Odoo 20 runs on prepaid credits. At the time of writing, Odoo's AI service page on IAP lists packs of 10, 100, 500 and 1,000 credits at 1 euro per credit, plus 20 free credits. How many credits a task uses depends on the feature, its complexity and the size of the request, so no fixed cost per action can be promised. Credits are tied to one service and one database, do not expire, are invoiced per pack, and unused credits can be refunded on request within 30 days of purchase. You can set an email alert threshold and optional auto-refill; if credits run out, the feature stops rather than breaking your workflow. The page quotes euros while many Syrian companies budget in US dollars, so note the currency instead of assuming a fixed rate. On plans, Odoo's pricing page lists Agentic AI and External API under the Custom plan, so check which plan your subscription is on.
A small, time-boxed pilot keeps it measured:
- Pick one use case.
- Set up one agent with narrow skills and restricted sources.
- Set the alert threshold.
- Check credit use weekly on the IAP page or the new My Subscription page.
- Review the stored conversations, then expand.

Frequently asked questions
How much does AI cost in Odoo 20?
Every AI feature draws on IAP credits. At the time of writing, Odoo's AI service page sells packs of 10 to 1,000 credits at 1 euro per credit and includes 20 free credits, while usage per task varies with the feature, task complexity and request size. Credits never expire, unused ones can be refunded on request within 30 days, and you can see your balance in Settings under Contacts > Odoo IAP > View My Services.
Does AI work in Odoo 20's offline mode?
No. Offline mode lets you create, edit, archive and delete records and re-run searches you ran before, all without internet. AI features rely on Odoo's online services and the selected AI provider, so they need a working connection. Use offline mode to keep work moving through outages, and plan AI tasks for times when your connection is stable.
What is MCP, and is it safe to connect an external AI tool to our Odoo?
MCP (Model Context Protocol) lets an MCP-compatible AI client reach your database at its URL plus /mcp. Each user creates an API key with the MCP scope and an expiry; the key is shown only once, and the client acts with that user's permissions. Only five read tools are exposed by default; any other must be enabled with developer mode on, under Settings > Technical > Server Actions, by ticking Available in MCP on the tool. External API access is listed under Odoo's Custom plan, so check your plan first.
Does Odoo AI work well in Arabic?
Odoo's release notes make no claim about Arabic output quality, so we do not promise it either. Pilot agents with your own Arabic documents and real customer questions, compare the results with what your staff would write, and keep a person reviewing every customer-facing text, especially on bilingual websites, where the generated-content marker shows which blocks the assistant generated or changed.
