What's New in Odoo 20 for Businesses in Syria: Offline, USD and AI
Odoo 20, released in September 2026, lets Syrian teams keep working when the connection drops, shows the exchange-rate date on converted dollar and pound totals, and adds AI agents. Here is what changes, what it costs and how to upgrade.

Odoo 20 in Syria at a glance: AI agents and their cost
Odoo 20 was released in September 2026 and touches 40 apps and areas. For a company in Syria, three changes stand out: work that continues when the connection drops, clearer handling of dollars and pounds, and AI agents that take on routine data entry. This guide covers what changes, what it costs and how to move safely.
Agents can create or update records on request, including from an uploaded instruction file such as a PDF. Picture a trading company in Aleppo that receives a supplier's quotation as a PDF: an agent can turn it into a purchase order for the buyer to check, reporting each step live instead of showing a vague "thinking" message.
Agents also work inside automation. Automated and scheduled actions can call an agent, and an agent can update its own setup to suit its task, with automation chats showing how it handled each run. What were called "topics" are now "skills". You can dictate requests by voice, outside AI tools can connect to your database through MCP (Model Context Protocol), and agent chats are kept for 30 days after the last message.
The cost needs planning. Every AI feature in Odoo 20 consumes credits, bought in packs through Odoo's In-App Purchase (IAP) service and priced per service. Enterprise users with a valid subscription get free credits to test with. Start with one repetitive task, watch how many credits it uses, then decide where else an agent earns its place.
Finance: dollars, pounds and fewer typing mistakes
Many Syrian companies price in dollars and pay local costs in Syrian pounds, so the books carry two currencies every day. Odoo 20 makes that easier to read:
- Converted totals show the date of the exchange rate used.
- The rate appears on screen when you register a payment in a foreign currency.
- Exchange gains and losses become one line per invoice, which expands to show the calculation.
- A dot or a comma both work as the decimal separator, whatever the language setting.
No Syrian exchange-rate provider was added, so your own rate policy (which rate, updated how often) still decides how accurate the reports are.
Daily entry gets lighter. When a vendor bill is typed or imported, Odoo pre-fills product, account, tax, analytic distribution and vehicle from earlier bills, and keeps anything you entered by hand. The payment wizard spots payments already marked "Paid" and deducts them from the amount due, so the same supplier is not paid twice. Customer invoice reminders can go out automatically, and duplicate detection now flags likely duplicate invoices and bills in red and possible ones in yellow.
Three changes need a new habit from your accountant:
- Any entry that touches a bank account must come from a bank transaction, not a manual journal entry, even when the statement reaches you on paper.
- Parent accounts replace account groups, and account codes become optional.
- "In Process" is now "Paid", and "Paid" is now "Reconciled".
Offline work, the shop counter, sales and stock
Offline mode is the change Syrian teams will feel first. When the line drops, users can still create, edit, archive, unarchive and delete records, and re-run searches they have run before. That is the full scope, so plan around it rather than expecting every screen to work without internet. Staff can also share a photo or PDF from their phone into Odoo to digitise a vendor bill or expense, or to create a task, lead or time-off request.
At the counter, Point of Sale now accepts several currencies at checkout in the same till, so a customer can settle in pounds or dollars. Also new in POS:
- Several printers per POS for shops with more than one cash desk.
- Service fees on orders, shown on invoices, for cafés and restaurants.
- Snoozing items, plus an alert when an expired product is selected, which helps pharmacies and grocers.
- One summary sale per session, with payment entries posted on schedule without closing the session.
In Sales, a dashboard sits above the quotations list, an order line can be a plain description, margins can be edited to recompute the price, and pricelist rules can target set periods or weekdays. Inventory suggests reorder minimums and maximums from demand history, adds a stock aging report, shows stock at a past date and applies landed costs to individual products. A small shop can now sell and ship without installing Inventory at all.
People: leave, attendance, payroll and field teams
The HR changes are practical rather than dramatic, which suits a growing team:
- Time off can be counted in calendar days or working days, so leave is calculated the way your policy reads.
- Public holidays can be loaded for the whole year, with suggestions based on the company's country. Check them against the days your company actually observes.
- If the check-in device has a camera, it can take a photo at check-in, useful for branches the manager rarely visits.
- eSSL and Mantra biometric devices can send attendance straight into Odoo.
- An overtime analysis report shows which rule applied to each overtime entry.
- Expense limits can be set per job position, so a manager can cap a claim at the authorised amount before final approval.
If you run Payroll in Odoo, pay runs follow a clearer step-by-step workflow, you choose when payslips go out (on confirmation, on payment or manually), and a net-to-gross simulation helps when a salary is agreed as a take-home figure. Odoo 20 ships no Syrian payroll package, so salary rules are configured for your company and reviewed by your own advisers.
Service businesses face one structural change. The Field Service app is discontinued and its features now live in Planning: a live map of technicians, optimised routing, travel fees and worksheets. A solar-installation or maintenance firm sending crews around Damascus and its countryside keeps the same tools, just inside a different app.
Syria in Odoo 20, and how to upgrade safely
To be clear: the Odoo 20 release notes contain no Syria-specific localization, and Syria is not among the new exchange-rate providers. The value for a Syrian business comes from the general improvements above (offline mode, clearer multi-currency, POS checkout in several currencies) on a setup built around USD with SYP alongside.
Before you upgrade, check where you stand:
- Odoo 17 left standard support in September 2026; versions 18, 19 and 20 are planned to follow in September 2027, 2028 and 2029. Extended support costs extra and is only offered on Odoo.sh or on-premise.
- On Enterprise, upgrading standard apps is free, as are Studio customisations while Studio is installed and its subscription is active. Data cleanup, training, and custom or third-party modules without a customisation maintenance contract are not included.
- Upgrade a test copy first. It runs neutralised, with scheduled actions, outgoing email and bank sync switched off.
- Review what changes: Field Service moves into Planning, work entries leave Payroll, account groups become parent accounts, payment statuses are renamed, the return wizard is gone and AI needs credits.
- On Odoo Online, a production upgrade cannot be reverted, and a major-version upgrade is required every two years.
- Moving from Community to Enterprise, changing hosting type or migrating from another system is a separate project, outside the upgrade service.

Frequently asked questions
Is upgrading to Odoo 20 free?
On Odoo Enterprise, yes for standard apps, and for Studio customisations as long as Studio is still installed and its subscription is active. Data cleanup, training, and custom or third-party modules not covered by a customisation maintenance contract are excluded, so budget for them separately. Either way, upgrade a test copy first and let your team try real work on it before you switch.
Do Odoo 20's AI agents cost extra?
Yes. Every AI feature in Odoo 20 uses credits bought in packs through Odoo's In-App Purchase (IAP) service, with pricing set per service. Enterprise users with a valid subscription receive free credits to test the features. The simplest way to budget is to start with one task and track how many credits it consumes.
We are on Odoo 17. Do we need to upgrade now?
Standard support for Odoo 17 ended in September 2026. Extended support is available at extra cost, but only on Odoo.sh or on-premise. On Odoo Online, a major-version upgrade is mandatory every two years in any case. Odoo allows upgrading from any version to any major version still under standard support, so moving straight to Odoo 20 is an option.
Is there a Syrian localization in Odoo 20?
No. The Odoo 20 release notes include no Syria-specific package, and no Syrian exchange-rate provider was added. What helps Syrian companies is the general platform: clearer multi-currency handling for USD and SYP, offline mode for unstable connections, POS checkout in several currencies, and a chart of accounts and rate policy set up around how your business really works.
